Yesterday was Walt Kelly's birthday. He would have been 94. Kelly is dear to me not only for his connection with Fred Moore and Ward Kimball's unite at Disney and the work he did on the classic animated films. He is treasured as the creator of "Pogo", a comic that continues to amuse and amaze me. Happy news it is to find Fantagraphics Books is doing a reprint of everything Pogo. Walt Kelly was one of those chance finds (I Go Pogo) as a kid that inspired me to continue learning to draw. I always admired the constant cheerfulness of what he drew, the constant inclusion of in-jokes, his facility with the English language, and the sure hand he had with a brush and ink. I've seen original work of his up close, and it amazes me even more.

I agree with you 100% on the cheerfulness and the shear lunacy of the characters even in a shouting match. His brush work and calligraphy were amazing.
Thanks R8R for looking.
Hi Todd, Yeah Kelly animated on Fantasia, Dumbo and some shorts. He and Ward played music together too but not in Ward Dixeland band Firehouse Five Plus Two. They would play tin whistles in the men's room and sing.
Are you still at Disney?
